Community Update

The safety and well-being of our community members remain our highest priority. The University continues to make careful, principled decisions based on ongoing security assessments, guidance from the U.S. government and the State of Qatar, and consultation with Qatar Foundation, partners across Education City, and Northwestern University leadership. We will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates and guidance to the community in a timely manner.

Community updates:

  • The University will continue with remote instruction and operations for the remainder of the semester, through the last day of classes.
  • Faculty are encouraged to exercise the broadest flexibility in recognition of the circumstances students may be navigating.
  • Faculty and staff have access to counseling and well-being resources through the Northwestern Employee Assistance Program.
  • Qatar Foundation housing continues to support students residing on campus, including daily iftar meals and access to essential services. Counseling and well-being resources remain available to students who may need support.
  • Members of the community may depart Qatar voluntarily. The University coordinated voluntary assisted departure support in partnership with Global Rescue.

General guidance:

  • We continue to monitor developments closely and remain guided by official directives and guidance from the State of Qatar.
  • Community members are encouraged to follow guidance issued by local authorities and to consult recommendations from their respective embassies and official government advisories.
  • Any personal decision to depart Qatar is voluntary and should be made based on personal circumstances, in consideration of relevant embassy guidance and available travel options.
  • Community members who remain in Qatar are encouraged to continue following local safety guidance and updates shared through University communications.
  • Airspace limitations and constrained travel options mean that travel conditions may change quickly. Individuals should take these factors into account when making personal travel decisions.

Yes. Leadership and security advisors have examined multiple scenarios, including travel disruptions, escalation possibilities, and evacuation planning.

Our current posture reflects the safest option based on available information.

Yes. They may choose to depart voluntarily if they believe it is the right decision for them.

 However:

  • Travel arrangements must be made independently.
  • Departures occur at individual risk and expense.
  • The University cannot arrange transportation or facilitate travel to the border.
  • Those travelling should inform HR, their line managers, and NU-Q Student Affairs.

Our responsibility is to make careful, principled decisions grounded in safety, accurate information, and care for our community. We will continue to do so with transparency and flexibility as the situation evolves.

Global Rescue provides security monitoring, intelligence updates, and crisis advisory support to the University.

Their role includes:

  • Monitoring regional developments
  • Providing risk assessments
  • Advising leadership on safety considerations

They do not operate as an evacuation transport provider for voluntary departures.

Travel options are limited due to:

  • Airspace restrictions
  • Border eligibility requirements
  • Visa limitations (including Saudi e-visa eligibility)

Students should confirm travel eligibility before making arrangements.

Students have access to:

  • Housing support
  • Daily Iftar meals
  • Counseling and Wellness services
  • Academic flexibility where needed
  • Ongoing communication from Student Affairs and leadership

Yes. We will continue to communicate regularly as the situation evolves and share verified updates from official sources.
