Student recognized internationally for innovative UV Abaya

September 23, 2025

Dana Mabrouk Ziani, a Communication student at Northwestern University in Qatar, was selected as one of 18 global finalists to present at the 30th AFS Youth Assembly in New York, a prestigious platform that cultivates a global network of young leaders and changemakers through exchange, education, innovation, and impact.

Representing both Northwestern Qatar and the State of Qatar, she showcased her research-driven innovation, the world’s first UV-protective abaya, developed under her brand Noyau Doha. Designed to block 98 percent of harmful ultraviolet rays, the garment merges fashion with science to address rising health and environmental concerns. For her work, Dana was recognized as Runner-Up in the international “Stories of Change Challenge,” which celebrates youth-led solutions to global challenges.

Dana’s career at Northwestern Qatar played a key role in shaping her interdisciplinary approach, combining media, communication, and entrepreneurship. Through the Strategic Communication minor and mentorship from Professor Mohammed Ibahrine, she translated her classroom knowledge into a two-year research and design project. Since launching in October 2024, “Noyau Doha” has grown rapidly, supported by NU-Q peers who wear the abayas both on campus and abroad.

Her participation at the Youth Assembly marked several historic milestones. Dana became the first Qatari and the first person from the Middle East to be recognized with this award. The Assembly opened at the United Nations Headquarters, where Dana was part of Qatar’s youth delegation and met with His Excellency Mohammed Al-Nasr, First Secretary and Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar. The following day at New York University, she presented her project to more than 500 international delegates, receiving recognition in front of a global audience.

“Transferring into Communications at Northwestern Qatar felt like a leap of faith after beginning my studies in medicine, but it was the best decision I have ever made. In just two years, I have established a business, represented the university and Qatar internationally, and achieved milestones I never imagined possible”

“Transferring into Communications at Northwestern Qatar felt like a leap of faith after beginning my studies in medicine, but it was the best decision I have ever made,” said Dana. “In just two years, I have established a business, represented the university and Qatar internationally, and achieved milestones I never imagined possible.”

Ibahrine, who supervised Dana’s project, highlighted her ability to merge creativity, strategic thinking, entrepreneurial mindset, and ethics, saying, “Dana exemplifies the kind of student who turns ideas into real-world solutions.” He added, “Her UV abaya is not just an innovative garment, but a contribution to public health and women’s empowerment in the region. It reflects the values  of excellence, collaboration, community, and sustainability we are committed to cultivating at Northwestern Qatar.”

Looking ahead, Dana is set to graduate in December 2025. She plans to continue scaling up her brand, Noyau Doha, while serving her community through her distinctive and impactful work in her career after graduation.

For Dana, her achievements reflect not only her own dedication but also the impact of Northwestern Qatar’s learning environment. “The support I found here empowered me to take risks, grow, and succeed,” she said. “Northwestern Qatar has been transformative for me, and I carry that forward with immense pride and gratitude.
