Northwestern Qatar has announced the appointment of James Shaw as associate dean for administration and chief operations officer and David Donaghue as the school’s new director of business and finance.

“As we start the academic year and renew our commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and administration,” Marwan M. Kraidy, dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar said, “these appointments bring additional expertise in global higher education management that will be instrumental in ensuring operational support for Northwestern Qatar’s upward trajectory as a center of excellence in knowledge production and sharing in Qatar, the Arab world, and the Global South.”

An experienced senior administrator in higher education management, Shaw brings more than 15 years of experience in strategic leadership, global education, service delivery, and operations in the Middle East, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. He joins Northwestern Qatar from the University College London (UCL), where he was deputy director of operations and previously served as director of operations for UCL’s campus in Qatar.

At Northwestern Qatar, Shaw will oversee facilities management, health and safety, human resources, information technology, production and business and finance. A member of the dean’s senior leadership council, Shaw will collaborate with Dean Kraidy and Senior Associate Dean and Chief Academic Officer Kathleen Hewett-Smith to develop and implement institutional strategies and professional practices that support excellence at all levels.

“From its growing student body and faculty to its expanding academic offerings and internal and external initiatives, Northwestern Qatar continues to grow in all aspects of its operations as an impactful institution,” said Shaw. “I look forward to contributing to the school’s growth by working with colleagues across departments to promote a greater sense of collegiality and collaboration while providing the support needed to maintain excellence in our academic mission.”
