Northwestern Appoints New Finance Officer

November 24, 2011

Doha, Qatar –24 November, 2011 – Northwestern University in Qatar has named Barry Sexton as director of business and finance (chief financial officer), effective November 1.

In announcing the appointment, Dr. Everette E. Dennis, dean and CEO of Northwestern University in Qatar said, “Sexton’s appointment comes as Northwestern embarks on a new phase of development and operations, with targeted leadership changes and an augmented program of activities and community outreach.”

“We are fortunate to have found a consummate professional who has served our home campus with distinction for seven years prior to his appointment here,” he added.

Sexton joined NU-Q from Northwestern’s Evanston campus where he managed the University’s payroll of some 20,000 people on campuses in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois and in Qatar and supervised a staff of 17 people.  He worked with schools across the university and has had a close relationship with the Qatar campus since its inception in 2008.  His responsibilities included professional management of payroll and benefits where he accomplished operational improvements and cost reductions. He also prepared personnel for new systems developments, especially relevant to the Qatar campus.

In his new role, Sexton will work closely with Northwestern’s home campus in the U.S. and with Qatar Foundation. Ultimately, this position “is about fiscal discipline and relationship building—and Barry Sexton is well suited for this task by virtue of his track record in the U.S.,” said Dean Dennis.

Prior to his service at Northwestern, Sexton was associated with FMC Technologies in Chicago, a global firm that designs, manufactures and services systems and products in energy, food processing and transportation as payroll supervisor. He received his bachelor’s degree in human resource management at Northern Illinois University and holds a post graduate certificate in structured computer programming from DePaul University.
