Pioneering Qatari filmmaker Hafiz Ali Ali to screen films at Northwestern

Pioneering Qatari filmmaker Hafiz Ali Ali will speak and screen two of his films at Northwestern University in Qatar April 26.

Born in Doha in 1975, Mr. Ali studied filmmaking at California Institute of the Arts and received his MFA in film and TV directing from Chapman University in California.  He has worked at Universal Studios in Los Angles and at Qatar TV in Doha.  He has contributed to the Fiction Film Festival, part of the Doha Cultural Festival and has served as a jury member for the Al-Jazeera 3rd Documentary Film Festival in 2007.  His Films include:

The Oryx Return (2007), winner of best documentary award and best director award at the Arab Radio and TV Festival in Tunis in 2007.

Cab Driver (2008), screened at festivals in USA, France, Canada, Spain, Tunis, Russia, Oman, UAE, Palestine and Switzerland.

Garangao (2008), for Al-Jazeera Children’s Channel.

Scents of Shadow (2009), winner of silver Award at Gulf TV & Radio Festival.

Souq Waqif, Architecture of Cultural Heritage (2010).

He was one of the artists touring with My Father’s House exhibition at Souq Waqif, where he also organized a documentary film workshop.  In March 2010, Mr. Ali joined Cultural Development Centre, Qatar Foundation, as Art Program Manager.
