About

Hicham Al Baker is the Gallery Registrar for The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar, the university’s digital-first museum that focuses on media, journalism, and communication.

Al Baker has extensive experience in the art and culture domain, across public and private sectors, focusing on collection management, copyright, art law, exhibition development and public art commissions.

He is a graduate of the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where he holds a dual bachelor’s degree in history of art and archeology and law and a master’s degree in business law with a specialization in Art History. He also holds a professional master’s in art market with a focus on modern and contemporary art from the Institut d’Études Supérieures des Arts (IESA).

After completing his education in Paris, Al Baker began his career in 2019 as an Acquisition Coordinator at Qatar Museums (QM), working exclusively in the office of the Chairperson. In this role, he oversaw acquisitions and collection development for all museums within QM. He also supported the QM Public Art Commissions Program for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

In 2020, Al Baker began practicing corporate law working as a legal officer for a large media conglomerate, where he focused on copyright, media law, and intellectual property. In 2021, he returned to QM as Exhibition Registrar for the National Museum of Qatar. 

In his current role at The Media Majlis, Al Baker is responsible for the care and management of all digital and physical objects that are loaned and licensed to the museum. He is also involved in the creation of the museum’s public engagement activities and works to promote the museum’s mission to explore the intersection of media, journalism, and communication.

Al Baker is passionate about art and its ability to connect people and cultures. He is also committed to using his legal skills to protect the rights of artists and collectors.
