February 07, 2024
Northwestern University in Qatar Professor Eddy Borges-Rey is the co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Journalism in the Global South, a new book examining the meanings, values, and practices of journalism from the perspective of the Global South.

Published by Routledge, a global publisher in the humanities and social sciences, the book is part of the Routledge Media and Cultural Studies Companions series, which offers surveys and assessments of the major topics in the fields of media, journalism studies, cultural studies, and political communication. With contributions from leading scholars in the field of media, journalism studies, sociology, and political communication from across the Global South, it examines the deep-seated challenges associated with the historical imposition of Western journalism standards on constituencies of the Global South.

"In response to the growing calls to decenter and decolonize journalism, this book delves into the challenges of the historical imposition of Western journalism standards on the Global South,” said Borges-Rey, associate professor in residence at Northwestern Qatar. “It not only highlights the deep-seated issues but also explores the potential opportunities for journalists and journalism educators through active engagement in international collaboration and education."

This compilation of 42 chapters revisits core inquiries concerning the essence, significance, and methodologies of journalism, exploring alternative methodological, theoretical, and epistemological viewpoints. Contributors challenge established "universal" standards for journalism, emphasizing the importance of customs, traditions, and cultures in defining and influencing local and regional journalism while showcasing important research on journalism in the Global South and by journalists based in the Global South.
“Professor Eddy’s book offers profound insights and urges active engagement in international collaboration. As part of Northwestern Qatar's rich scholarly productions, this book contributes to redefining journalism in the Global South, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives and cultural influences”
- Marwan M. Kraidy, dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar
Among the notable contributions is a chapter by Northwestern Qatar Professor Claudia Kozman exploring the challenges and dynamics of reporting on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Titled Reporting the MENA as Conflict: Political Influences, Routine Practices, and Journalists’ Struggles in the Field, it examines the broader discourse on journalism in this critical geopolitical context and the complex landscape where political influences, routine journalistic practices, and the struggles faced by journalists intersect.

“Professor Eddy’s book offers profound insights and urges active engagement in international collaboration,” said Marwan M. Kraidy, dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar. “As part of Northwestern Qatar's rich scholarly productions, this book contributes to redefining journalism in the Global South, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives and cultural influences."
