November 08, 2023
As recent global events across the Global South unfold, Northwestern Qatar alumni are at the frontlines of international media coverage, reporting on major events from the heart of the region and amplifying the voices of its people through responsible and impactful storytelling.

Whether it is reporting on the deadly earthquake in Morocco, Libya's devastating floods, covering the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, or the ongoing war in Gaza, Northwestern Qatar alumni are documenting the humanitarian and long-lasting implications of these events on the ground while telling the stories of the affected people to the rest of the world.

Among these alumni is Mohammed Eltayeb  ’20, who worked on capturing the resilience and determination of the Moroccan people as they rebuilt their lives in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake. With his microphone in hand and a passion for storytelling, Eltayeb traveled to the affected regions in Morocco, and through his in-depth reporting for Doha News, he shed light on the challenges faced by survivors and the humanitarian aid efforts that brought hope to the areas and communities in need.

Back in Doha, Northwestern Qatar alum Asmahan Qarjouli ’20 has been following the diplomatic, geopolitical, and logistical complexities of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan while covering the humanitarian impact on the Afghan people. Her work has encompassed a broad spectrum of the crisis, focusing on Qatar's efforts to evacuate tens of thousands of civilians and provide vital support in delivering aid to those in need within Afghanistan.

Another alum at the forefront of international media coverage is Salwa Sadek ’20, who has been producing in-depth social media explainers for AJ+ on the ongoing war in Gaza, the hijab ban in France, and other issues affecting communities in the Global South. Her work engages social media audiences beyond headlines and aims to combat misinformation and fake news, amplifying the voices of those affected by these global events and fostering a deeper understanding of complex social, cultural, and political issues.

Similarly, Northwestern Qatar alum and podcast producer Al Anoud Al-Aqeedi ’23 has been providing a platform for Palestinian voices to share their insights and personal narratives in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. By amplifying Palestinian voices in her podcast "The Orbit with Anoud," she is shedding light on the Palestinian perspective while challenging disinformation and fostering a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of the war in Gaza and the Palestinian cause.
