Northwestern Qatar unveils architectural gem

Everette E. Dennis, dean and CEO of Northwestern University in Qatar, spoke with Mark Glaser of MediaShift about NU-Q's new building on the Education City campus in Doha, and school operations under the blockade.

"We plan to open school in mid-August as we always do," Dennis said. "We see this [embargo against Qatar] as a challenge to freedom of expression, and it’s brought out Qatari leadership talking more forcefully about press freedom than ever before."

The 2017-18 school year will be NU-Q's first full school year in its new home -- a 515,000 square-foot space designed by famed New Mexico architect Antoine Predock.

"It has the infrastructure of a television network and a Hollywood studio, so it has all the bells and whistles that you could imagine," said Dennis. "It has a cinema with Dolby surround sound, a spectacular library, a robotic newsroom like nothing you’ll see anywhere else."
