Northwestern University in Qatar is seeking a collaborative, forward-thinking Instruction Librarian to support it student, faculty and institutional interdisciplinary study and research in communication, media, journalism, and the liberal arts.

The Instruction librarian is responsible for coordinating and planning the instructional program. Under the supervision of the library director, the Instruction librarian will plan, organize, and provide reference and instruction services to the NU-Q community. The successful candidate will be responsible for collaborating with other librarians to perform a whole-year series of information literacy sessions. The successful candidate will create and maintain subject and instructional LibGuide as part of the information literacy program and will help determine and measure information literacy learning outcomes. As part of a team of librarians, the successful candidate will share responsibilities for reference desk service, covering the morning and/or evening shifts, collection development, liaison with faculty departments and researchers, and classroom instruction. 

Principal Responsibilities

Works closely with the reference librarian to manage the day-to-day operations of reference and research services, managing general and specialized student/faculty questions.

Give instructions on how to effectively use NU-Q electronic resources and databases through instructional sessions.

Create online tutorials, bibliographies, and Lib Guide to help library patrons in their research endeavors. Create a comprehensive guide on how to access library resources including using the library catalog, databases, print materials, and other online sources.

Help in creating policies and procedures for library instructions to enhance efficiency and meet patron needs.

Supports faculty in integrating library resources in course material for course development.

Participates in library marketing and communication initiatives.

Compiles and manages reports relating to library instructions and reference services.

Acts as a liaison librarian to faculty to curate materials for the library's collection.

Review, evaluate, and select library materials for collection development.

Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned within the scope of the role.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A Masters Degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent and two to three years of professional experience in a library, preferably academic

  2. Professional experience with providing library instruction and reference service.

  3. Strong written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills.

Minimum Competencies

  1. Ability to promote library services and engage library users.

  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse community in an inclusive manner among both internal and external constituents.

  3. Excellent oral/written English communication and presentation skills.

  4. Willingness to work morning and evening shifts

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience working/living in the middle east in an academic environment.

  2. Knowledge of or experience working in a U.S. or U.S.-style higher education institution.

  3. Knowledge of Arabic.

Preferred Competencies

  1. Ability to multi-task projects with minimal supervision in a team environment across departments or divisions of the university.
