Northwestern University in Qatar has appointed new directors for its library and admissions program.

Library Director Mark T. Paul joins NU-Q from the Qatar National Library, while Admissions Director Alex Schultes was most recently with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.

“With the appointment of Alex Schultes and Mark Paul, NU-Q continues to attract high-caliber and experienced professionals to its leadership ranks,” said Everette E. Dennis, dean and CEO.

Both have worked in key roles at major U.S. universities, including Northwestern, the University of Miami and University of Louisville, as well as holding international assignments in the Middle East and elsewhere involving both undergraduate and graduate education.

“Both are people-oriented who will work with current and future students,” Dennis said.

Paul, an expert in library and information science, was responsible for partnerships with national and regional libraries and archives, as well as other institutions and organizations concerned with digital cultural heritage at the Qatar National Library.

Prior to his appointment in Qatar, he was the library director at the University of St. Martin in Saint Maarten (Caribbean) where he led the creation of a new library for a small university including space planning and collection development. Before that, he held several successive positions at the University of Louisville where he was assistant director of the Office of Libraries Technology, acting director of that office, electronic services coordinator, and current periodicals unit supervisor. He also held the rank of assistant professor there. Other assignments have included visiting assistant engineering librarian at the University of Illinois where, earlier, he was a reference librarian.

The new library director has co-authored on such topics as qualitative assessment for libraries, business liaison collaboration, and developing an e-reserves service in such publications as Practical Academic LibrarianshipSound Instruction, and Academic Exchange Quarterly. Paul received his Master of Library Science degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Louisville.

Admissions Director Schultes has extensive experience recruiting both graduate and undergraduate students. “This will enhance NU-Q’s capacity as we develop graduate programs,” Dennis said.

While at KAUST, Schultes developed and implemented life-cycle outreach campaigns that resulted in a rich pool of students, set up partnerships to more effectively recruit students, and streamlined open house programs.

He began his career in admissions and administration at the University of Miami where he was senior assistant director of undergraduate admissions. Subsequently, he served as assistant director of student recruitment for the University of Miami Law School and as assistant director of operations at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management at its Miami campus.

Schultes has a BA from Brown University in political economy and development and an MAIA in international administration from the University of Miami where he has also pursued PhD work in international studies.
