Children learn reporting skills at NU-Q’s Ajyal newsroom

Brothers Mohammed Nasser and Sultan Nasser try their hands at broadcasting live updates from Northwestern University in Qatar’s studio at the Ajyal Film Festival.

Parent Nasser Al Qahtani said, “The experience was a confidence-builder for my children. This is a great way to introduce the field of journalism to young people and show them what happens behind the scenes of a newscast.”

Nine NU-Q journalism and communication students operated the newsroom and roaming cameras, which broadcast live hourly updates from the festival and streamed live onto the Doha Film Institute website. Throughout the festival’s Family Weekend children and parents were invited to try presenting the news themselves from the anchor’s chair while family and friends watched from the studio. The NU-Q students were supported by production staff from the university’s own television studios.

NU-Q is an official partner of the Ajyal Film Festival. Earlier this month NU-Q and DFI embarked on a new partnership to research entertainment media in six Arab countries.
