Leadership Programs

An important aspect of a student’s  education is developing  leadership skills to improve your team work, enhance communities and, eventually, impact those aspects of the world with which one comes in contact.

NU-Q students have access to one on one advising, NU-Q and Education City  retreats and workshops, and assessment tools and professionals through which they gain a greater self-awareness and improve as citizens and leaders.

Assessment

StrengthsQuest – Incoming freshmen take a StrengthsQuest Leadership Assessment during New Student Orientation, which helps them identify their Top 5 Strengths.  This knowledge helps students better understand their leadership qualities and how best to utilize them.

StrengthsQuest is used on more than 600 campuses in North America.  More than 850, 000 students have used StrengthsQuest to gain insights into how to use their talents to achieve academic success, to explore careers, and in leadership development.

Workshops and retreats throughout their undergraduate career refer back to this initial exercise.

Retreats

NU-Q students lead lives filled with academic study, extra-curricular activities and social obligations. Retreats, both at-home and abroad, allow students to get away and reflect on their leadership in the company of their peers. Past leadership retreats:

  • NU-Q Leadership Retreat: Tunisia (Fall 2009)
Students spent 5 days in Tunis, Tunisia attending workshops led by NU-Q staff focused on developing leadership skills, strengthening ties within our campus community, and telling the story of their personal narrative.
  • LeaderShape Institute (Annual Winter Break Retreat)
Students from across Education City are invited to apply for the opportunity to attend this intensive leadership retreat with students from other universities.

NU-Q Introduction to Leadership

This leadership training is offered to student government executive board members and any student who is a member of, or holds a leadership position in, any NU-Q club or organization. The workshop agenda includes  mission statement creation, NU-Q policy and procedures, fiscal responsibility and event planning.

Education City Workshops

Education City Student Leader Workshop

One day a year, student group leaders from across Education City gather to discuss common issues and find solutions to their questions about leading a student group before embarking on their journey.  Students and staff from across Education City present their findings.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Summer Conference

This one-day conference gives freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to reconnect with classmates and staff members and dig in to significant life questions:

  • Am I in the right major?
  • I got in to university — what will I do when I get out?
  • What is my personality type and how does it relate to the decisions I make?
  • How can I be a better student/leader/club member next year?
