About

Justin D. Martin is associate professor in residence at Northwestern University in Qatar, where he has taught since 2012. His PhD is from the journalism school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2009). He teaches courses in data visualization, statistics, and enterprise reporting.

Martin’s research focuses on media use and public opinion in the Arab region, and he is a principal investigator of Media Use in the Middle East, a longitudinal study that surveys 6,000 respondents in six Arab countries every year. The project has secured approximately $1.4 million in competitive external funding from the Qatar National Research Fund. 

Martin’s research is published in Journalism Studies, the International Journal of CommunicationInformation, Communication & Society, Journalism Practice, the International Communication Gazette, the Journal of Media & ReligionJournalism & Mass Communication Educator, and elsewhere.

He has reported from the Middle East and North Africa for such publications as Foreign PolicyThe AtlanticThe Chronicle of Higher EducationQuartzColumbia Journalism Review, and other outlets. 

Martin also holds an MA in mass communication from the University of Florida and a BS in psychology from High Point University. A former Fulbright grantee in Jordan and faculty member at the American University in Cairo, he speaks multiple dialects of Arabic.
